What is a blockchain credential?

Modified on Wed, 26 Jun at 6:42 PM

A blockchain credential is any kind of credential (diploma, certificate of completion, identification card, membership card, etc.) that is secured on a blockchain. Digit.ink credentials are secured on the Ethereum Blockchain.

What does it mean for you?

It means that the digital signature of your credentials are stored on Ethereum’s incorruptible digital ledger. Once your credential is issued, no one can change it without invalidating it. Not us, not the recipients, not even you. It's like it's set in digital stone.

How it looks

In the top left of the credential viewer, if your credentials are valid, you'll see a panel showing “Verified”. Besides the digital signature validation, other checks (expiration date, revocation status, etc.) are also performed, yielding incredibly strong security properties.

And if you're curious about the Ethereum transaction that's keeping your credential safe, click on “View transaction link”.

What if I want to make a change?

The only things you can tweak are certain types of web-based content in the media showcase. You can learn more about how to edit this digital media here. But remember, the core data of your credential is unchangeable.

The only big move you can make, for safety reasons, is revoking or reinstating a credential. There's more to learn about how to revoke credentials if you're interested.
